Happy September, Brethren!

     With school officially back in session, I hope those of you with children or grandchildren are enjoying a little more quiet time during the day. Some of us are lucky enough to see our children heading back to university, while others are watching them move into their first apartment. The old adage that “time flies” certainly rings true, especially when we take a moment to reflect as parents. Someone very wise once said to me, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

     We had some fun in August. Onion Creek put on an outstanding Fellowcraft Degree for one of our candidates as he continues his journey toward becoming a Master Mason. We were also fortunate to have many visiting Brethren from around the district. It was a proud evening - good ritual, good fellowship, and good Masonry all in the same night.

     Later in the month, several of us visited Lockhart Masonic Lodge No. 690 to witness our Lockhart Brethren welcome another fine man into our Fraternity. It was a pleasure to be there and share in their evening.

     For those who may not know, September is also an historic month in Masonry.

     In September of 1793, President George Washington presided over the cornerstone ceremony for the United States Capitol. Masons from Virginia, Maryland, Georgetown, and the newly established Federal City participated in the ceremony. Brother Washington used Masonic working tools and placed an inscribed silver plate beneath the cornerstone, followed by the traditional use of corn, wine, and oil.

     It was a singular moment in American Masonic history: Brother Washington participated in a Masonic cornerstone ceremony while serving as President of the United States.

     About a week before that ceremony, Federal Lodge No. 15 was chartered by the Grand Lodge of Maryland. The Lodge was formed by Masons working on the construction of the Capitol and included architect James Hoban among its early members. Its first meeting was held on September 15, and its first public appearance was the Capitol cornerstone ceremony on September 18. Federal Lodge No. 15 would later become Federal Lodge No. 1 of the District of Columbia.

     The Lodge will be dark Monday 9/7, in observance of Labor Day.

     Thursday, September 17th, I will open a Called Communication for work in the First Degree of Masonry. If you are able, I ask that you make every effort to attend and support our candidate and your Lodge. Your presence matters, particularly on an evening when we are doing the work of the Craft.

     On September 17th, Onion Creek will otherwise be dark, as many of our members will be attending a Shrine Stated Communication. Candidates who would like some additional practice should coordinate with your instructors.

     Monday September 21st, Junior Past Master Bobby Clakely will once again be slinging his spatulas for our recurring Steak and Stogie Night. Please be sure to RSVP. Details can be found in the This Week at Onion Creek weekly email, or you may contact Bro. Clakely directly.

     Lastly, Brethren, if you haven't been to Lodge in a while, come visit us. There is always a place for you at Onion Creek.  And if transportation is keeping you away, don't let it.  Let our Secretary know you need a ride and we will help arrange transportation for you!
